Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson were both members of the House of Burgesses in Williamsburg, Virginia, when Henry called upon Jefferson to draft a joint resolution proclaiming a “Day of Humiliation, Prayer and Fasting,” designated for June 1st, 1774, at the British closure of the port of Boston. The proclamation being authored, George Wythe, fellow-member of the House of Burgesses, signed it.
